First His Curls, Now His Talent

Michael likes to claim that Catherine is all my daughter, especially when she's being neurotic or messy or bossy, but those curls did not come from me. And neither did her budding artistic talent.

This is Catherine's latest doodle creation. She was sitting on the couch next to me drawing while I was working, and she looked up and said "Look at my whale Mom!" I expected to see some squiggles, maybe some "C"s and some circles with a few eye dots scattered around here and there, but when I looked over I actually saw a whale.

Sure, it might have been an accident, but I was very impressed. Impressed enough to take several pictures.

Catherine also made this medal yesterday for our free throw shooting contest. Daddy helped her with the words, ok, and maybe the picture a little bit, but the design was all her.

It's also fun to watch Catherine's imagination at work. The other day I was moving everything around in the living room to vacuum, and the girls' chairs ended up in a line front-to-back, instead of sitting next to each other, and Catherine immediately shouted "It's a CAR!!" She filled up one seat with all the essentials, Mary hopped in the front, and Catherine drove from the back. Last night I moved the chairs back for Bible study and Catherine immediately started whining that I wrecked her car. It's back to car-shape this morning, and I think the girls are driving to Morgan's house again.

More Potato Heads

We all nearly roasted to a crispy brown this week - it was mid- to upper-eighties outside all week, with bright bright sun, which meant it was mid-nineties in the house. We spent a lot of time hiding in the basement, which probably stayed in the seventies, and the girls spent a lot of time wearing nothing but diapers, which they love.

The heat did seem to wear them out a little bit though, as they both had a good long afternoon nap almost every day this week.

It seems we have spent a lot of time this week playing potato heads. Catherine likes to build an actual potato head or carrot head and set it up high on a book shelf so we can all look at it.

Mary prefers a more...organic approach to building potato heads. She's going through an impressionist phase. Her potato heads usually have several ears, and almost always have an arms sticking out of the top of their heads. It's rather a surprise that this one actually has a face where the face should go.

And just a note: it is unwise to lie on the floor with your eyes closed if Mary is in the room with a ukulele. The bridge of my nose is slightly bruised and very tender. Ukuleles are not big, but they are not soft either.

Rapido!

Dora taught Catherine to say "rapido" and now she likes to say (scream) it when she's running fast.

As you can see the heat has done nothing to zap her energy level the way it has to the rest of us.

And this video Catherine titled "Reading Time" when she watched it.

I'm sorry Mary, but I can't resist putting this picture up. You just look like you're having so much fun.

And someone mentioned Mary is getting some curls, which is definitely true, at least in this humidity. The hair at the nape of her neck and around her ears is getting curlier every day. We might have dominated with the blue eye genes, but it appears the girls are going to have Daddy's curly hair.

Church at the Beach

Are you getting tired of Sunday at the beach pictures yet? Sorry - I like taking them. We had actual church at Breakwater Beach this Sunday. The last time we did this both girls were soaked up to the waists of their church dresses by the time the service was over, so this Sunday I outsmarted them by putting them in play clothes and tossing a couple easy dresses in the bag to change into when they got all wet. Neither of them so much as stuck a toe in the water.

And I didn't actually take that many pictures because Mary really just wanted to snuggle in my lap the whole morning.

And for some reason all my pictures have the subject on the far left lately. Sorry.

Accessories.

I don't have too much to say about these photos really.

They like hats.
They like purses.
They like phones.
They like chairs.

That pretty much explains it. And please ignore Mary's fat lip. It's all better now.
