This past school year, Catherine and Mary took a science class with several friends taught by the former-science-teacher-mom of one of those friends. That mom also organizes a science overnight at Shaw Nature Reserve over the summer, so Catherine and Mary went on the three-day trip and, verging on the miraculous, I was able to leave Agnes and the rest of the kids and come along as a chaperone. I think I had as much fun as the girls did.
Each day we had a class or two led by rangers that included a lot of exploring. Then there were lots of other hikes, games, bonfires, and general outdoor shenanigans.

During one of the classes this butterfly showed up and hitched a ride on several different people before flying off.
There were cool trees everywhere.
One of my favorite native wildflowers that we saw - spiderwort.
We spent one class looking for critters in pond water.
And there were lots of water games.
The "dribble, dribble, drench" version of "duck duck goose" is very popular.
But my favorite part was definitely the pre-dawn hike that a bunch of the kids wanted to go on in order to try to spot the beavers in the pond. We saw a deer splashing through the shallows, and heard a beaver tail-slap, but didn't spot any beavers. Still it was a gorgeous morning.
These are all the campers, minus one who went home not feeling well.
And all the campers + most of the adult chaperones. It was so nice to have an overnight camp type option that was run and attended by all people we know - friends and friends of friends. A perfect three days!
